Motorised & smart tracks: when to specify

Motorisation has moved from luxury to expectation on the right window. Here is where it genuinely earns its place, and the practical questions to settle before you specify it.

Motorisation used to be a flourish. On the right window it is now simply the sensible answer, but it is also where an under-specified job shows up fastest, usually because the power was never planned in. The hardware is the easy part; the foresight is the value. Here is how we think about it.

Where it genuinely earns its place

  • Long runs of glass: bi-folds, sliders and walls of windows, where drawing a heavy curtain by hand twice a day quickly loses its charm.
  • High or hard-to-reach windows: stairwells, double-height spaces, rooflights, anything you would otherwise need a pole or a ladder to reach.
  • Heavy or interlined curtains: where the weight makes hand operation a chore and a strain on the fabric.
  • Scene and schedule control: curtains that close at dusk, open at dawn, or move with a single command across a room.
  • Accessibility: where ease of operation is a genuine need rather than a luxury.

On a modest, easily drawn window, motorisation adds cost and complication for little gain. Specify it where it solves a real problem.

Settle this before first fix

The single most common motorised-track regret is power. Hard-wired systems need a spur run to the track before the walls are closed up. Decide the power and control method at planning stage. Retrofitting a cable into a finished room is the expensive way to learn this.

The practical questions to answer

  1. Power: hard-wired (cleanest, needs planning), plug-in (simplest, needs a nearby socket) or rechargeable battery (most flexible, needs recharging). Decide early.
  2. Control: remote handset, wall switch, app, voice, or integration with a wider home system. Match it to how the client actually lives.
  3. The window itself: confirm the system suits the span, the curtain weight, and any bay or curve, since not every motor and track will bend.
  4. Quietness: it matters in bedrooms and living rooms; specify a system designed to run smoothly and softly.

Measuring and fitting still apply

A motorised track is still a track: it needs the same stack-back and clearance thinking, and the same wall or ceiling fix decision. Ceiling-fixing often suits a motorised run on a wall of glass. For the big openings these systems are made for, start with measuring for bi-folds and large glazing.

When is a motorised track worth it?
